Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, 67, announced on Sunday that he had tested positive for COVID-19, that his symptoms were mild and that he remained optimistic.

I regret to inform you that I have been contaminated with COVID-19. Symptoms are mild, but I'm already on medical treatment, said the head of state on his Facebook page.

Mr. Lopez Obrador, who has maintained most of his activities during the pandemic, has appointed Home Secretary Olga Sánchez to replace him at his press conference from Monday to Friday.

I will be attentive to public affairs from the National Palace. For example, on Monday I will have a telephone interview with President Vladimir Putin, he said.

The leftist leader had three public events over the weekend, the last of them Friday morning in the state of San Luis Potosi.
