WASHINGTON, December 4th. / TASS /. The US authorities can impose sanctions on all those involved in "falsification" if such take place in the parliamentary elections to be held in Venezuela on December 6. The US special envoy for Iran and Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, said this in an interview with Reuters published on Thursday.

According to the agency, the State Department official also confirmed that, according to the Washington administration, the upcoming elections will be fictitious.

The situation in Venezuela escalated after opposition leader Juan Guaido, whose appointment as speaker of parliament was annulled by the Supreme Court two days earlier, declared himself acting president on 23 January 2019. The United States recognized him as the interim head of state; the countries of the Lima Group (with the exception of Mexico), the Organization of American States and most of the European Union joined them. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called the incident an attempted coup and announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the United States. Russia, Belarus, Iran, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, Syria and Turkey expressed their support for it.
