KIEV, December 1. / TASS /. The Naval Attaché at the US Embassy in Ukraine, Peter Mallory, and the Commander of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Oleksiy Neizhpapa, during a visit to the main naval base of Ukraine "South" discussed bilateral cooperation, as well as security issues in Cherny and Azov seas. This was announced on Tuesday by the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
"The Naval Attaché (at the US Embassy in Ukraine, Captain Second Rank Peter Mallory) visited the main base of the Ukrainian Navy (in Odessa), where he held a number of bilateral meetings with representatives of the Ukrainian Navy command, during which the parties discussed areas of bilateral military cooperation," stated on the official website of the ministry.
As specified by Neizhpapa, quoted by the press service, Ukraine and the United States are cooperating in the field of training ship crews, command and control bodies and manning the Navy. The meeting, he said, was devoted to "cooperation in different directions – this is the training of personnel, this is the replenishment of the naval personnel of the Navy, the issue of environmental safety in the Black and Azov Seas was also discussed."
On the eve, the command of the Ukrainian Navy held a similar meeting with British diplomats. As reported on the department's Facebook page, on Monday in Odessa, Neizhpapa met with the defense attaché at the British Embassy in Ukraine Tim Woods, the purpose of which was to "discuss the current state and promising areas of bilateral military cooperation", as well as security issues in Azov- Black Sea region. In addition, the parties discussed the implementation of a project to create missile boats and equip them with modern weapons and automation systems in accordance with the practice of NATO member states.
In October, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to expand military cooperation with Britain, Turkey and the United States, as well as that Ukraine is starting to build two naval bases to protect the Black Sea region. The latter fact, according to the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, can negatively affect the atmosphere of stability in this territory.
As for military cooperation with Great Britain, it became known on October 7 that London will provide Kiev with a ten-year loan, part of which should go to the construction of missile boats for the Ukrainian Navy at British factories. On November 19, the American embassy in Kiev informed that the Ukrainian maritime security units in Berdyansk, Zaporozhye region and Mariupol, Donetsk region will receive equipment worth $ 4 million from the United States.
