An extraordinary meeting of the French National Defense Council will be held on Friday at the initiative of the French President amid a series of attacks that occurred on Thursday. This was stated by French Prime Minister Jean Casteks, speaking at the National Assembly (the lower house of the country's parliament).

"In connection with the brutal attacks on the territory of the republic, the President is convening the National Defense Council tomorrow morning," he said. The head of government added that in the current situation, the authorities will strengthen security measures throughout the country.

A man armed with a knife attacked the parishioners of Notre Dame Cathedral in central Nice early Thursday morning. According to the latest information, three people died as a result of the attack, the attacker was detained. The National Antiterrorist Prosecutor's Office of France joined the investigation of the incident. Two hours after the Nice attack, another attacker threatened passers-by on the streets of Avignon with a knife and was shot and killed while trying to attack a police patrol. In addition, on Thursday in the Saudi city of Jeddah, a local resident stabbed a guard at the French consulate with a knife, police arrested the attacker at the crime scene.
