NEW YORK, October 28. / TASS /. Political strategist Vitaly Shklyarov, who has American citizenship and was released from custody in Belarus, returned to the United States. This was announced on Wednesday by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.
"After three months of unlawful detention and house arrest, Shklyarov was reunited with his family and returned to the United States," the head of the American Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "As the (US) president and I made it clear, we will not tolerate foreign authorities unlawfully detaining US citizens," the chief of American diplomacy emphasized.
As reported by CNN with reference to Pompeo, Shklyarov arrived in Washington on Tuesday evening local time. According to the sources of the TV channel, the special envoy of the US President Roger Carstens went to Belarus this week for Shklyarov. First, they arrived from Minsk to Kiev, where the political consultant met with his family, and then went to the United States. According to the channel, Shklyarov is now healthy. He is in an American hospital and is being examined as a precautionary measure.
As the US State Department reported last week, Pompeo in a telephone conversation called on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to allow Shklyarov to immediately leave the territory of Belarus. Earlier, Shklyarov's lawyer Anton Gashinsky told TASS that the political strategist who was released from the pre-trial detention center under house arrest was changed to a written undertaking not to leave the place.
Shklyarov was arrested at the end of July in Gomel, and charged with organizing and preparing actions that grossly violate public order. It is being held in the case of blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky, the wife of ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. According to the republic's state media, Shklyarov was a consultant to Tikhanovsky's "Country for Life" project and in fact mobilized a protest electorate around the blogger, who is currently under arrest.
Shklyarov was born in Belarus, lived in the United States for several years, his wife and child are American citizens.
