The Georgian Interior Ministry has identified the person who raided a bank in Zugdidi this week.
“On the basis of the operative-search work carried out by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the identity of the perpetrator of the robbery at the Bank of Georgia branch in the city of Zugdidi has been established, and he has been identified,” the ministry said in a statement released on Sunday.
The document calls on the media and citizens not to disclose the name and photo of the offender if they have such information, as this will interfere with the conduct of investigative measures aimed at arresting the raider.
According to local media reports, Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri is in Zugdidi at these hours, where he is holding an operational meeting at the regional police department.
As reported, on October 21, a man in camouflage uniforms, gloves, and a mask, armed with a machine gun and a grenade, broke into the building of the Bank of Georgia branch in the city of Zugdidi, fired several shots, and laid more than two dozen bank employees and visitors to the floor.
He held hostages for almost 12 hours. Through the media, the robber demanded that the authorities release everyone for a ransom of $ 500,000.
Having received a ransom and guarantees of his safety, the offender disappeared in a car in an unknown direction in the area of the border with Abkhazia.
