The attack on a police station in the Paris suburbs on Saturday evening by around forty people who fired fireworks mortars, without causing any injuries, sparked a stir among French police officers and the wrath of the opposition of right that calls for firmness.

Two officers were in front of the Champigny-sur-Marne police station smoking when around forty people, faces concealed and armed with iron bars, arrived, breaking in particular the windows of police vehicles and the glass door of the entry, according to a police source.

The two officials barely had time to take shelter in the security lock at the entrance to the police station. The incidents started shortly before midnight and ended an hour later.

Eight mortars were found nearby, said the Paris police headquarters.

Two police officers violently attacked Wednesday

A police union, Alliance, immediately denounced the attack. It is high time for the government to take action on the violence committed against the police, reacted its general delegate, Frédéric Lagache.

No one respects the police and the government has unfortunately failed to reverse this trend.

This attack comes as the country is in shock from the very violent attack on Wednesday evening, which suffered two police officers who were beaten and shot and wounded in the Paris region while they were on a mission. According to a source close to the investigation, the most seriously injured police officer is in stable condition, but still in an artificial coma.

President Emmanuel Macron will receive the police unions on Thursday.

In April, this police station, the only one in this municipality of more than 77,000 inhabitants, had already been the target, on a smaller scale, of fireworks, but it was just young people who had trouble living in confinement, according to the mayor of the city, Laurent Jeanne.

Explosive charge

Fireworks mortars, pyrotechnic devices used by fireworks professionals, are more and more often diverted by delinquents to attack the police.

They consist of a cardboard cylinder and an explosive charge. In normal use, it is planted on the ground and pulled into the air. But the thugs seized it to make a weapon by destination. With a straight shot, it can injure someone and in the face, explains to theAFP Rocco Contento, spokesperson for the Unity SGP union.

The Minister of the Interior said on Sunday his desire to prohibit by law their sale to the public.

The right-wing opposition demanded a strong reaction from the government.

These war scenes are intolerable, for Valérie Pécresse, president of the Île-de-France region. Marine Le Pen, president of the far-right Rassemblement national party, called for an absolutely considerable turn of the screw on crime and to rearm morally the police men.

A series of violent news items targeting police officers has revived since this summer the issue of insecurity in the French political debate, about 18 months before the presidential election.

According to a study published in November 2019 by the National Observatory for Delinquency and Criminal Responses (ONDRP), the French national police identified 12,853 officers injured in 2018, up nearly 16% compared to 2017.

In 1% of cases (compared to 8% in 2017), the injuries were made with a weapon (firearm, blade or by destination).
