According to the poll, 23.9% of the country’s residents were in favor of holding the Games next summer.

At least 33.7% of Japanese residents consider it necessary to cancel the postponed Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo due to the situation with the coronavirus pandemic. This is evidenced by the data of a sociological survey conducted by the Kyodo agency published on Sunday.

Another 36.4% of those polled were in favor of a second postponement of the competition. At the same time, 23.9% of the country’s residents expressed the opinion that the Games should be held next summer. The survey was conducted from 17 to 19 July using mobile and landline phones using a random sample method. The number of respondents is not indicated.

The Tokyo Olympics were supposed to take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the competition was postponed for a year and will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021. At the same time, the name of the Tokyo 2020 Games will be retained.

In June, the organizing committee of the Tokyo Games officially spoke in favor of simplifying the format of the competition next year. It is planned that they will be organized on the basis of three basic principles – ensuring a safe environment, minimizing costs necessary for understanding on the part of Tokyo residents, and simplifying the format of the Games in order to make them safer.

At the same time, the head of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, Yoshiro Mori, previously expressed the opinion that if the coronavirus pandemic cannot be dealt with by the summer of 2021, the Games will have to be canceled. The chairman of the Japanese Olympic Committee, Yasuhiro Yamashita, noted that no criteria for holding the Olympics have yet been determined.
